Nicola Ryan, 36 from Kirk Hallam, was first diagnosed with kidney problems at the age of 13. By age 21 she had complete kidney failure and was put on Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD). In September 2001, Nicola received a kidney transplant.

Nicola is extremely grateful to the donor and their family. She said “I’ve always tried to look after myself, to give the transplant the best shot, out of respect for the person who donated it, and their family. I’m lucky and glad to be alive, and I have the choice to go out and enjoy my life. I want to do something to help other people.”

When Nicola decided to do a sponsored run to improve her fitness, she didn’t choose a kidney charity, she chose Treetops Hospice. Treetops cared for her mum’s cousin, Christine Nash, when she was dying of breast cancer. Nicola’s mum Teresa has fond memories of Christine: “She had amazing brown eyes that lit up. She was always positive, she always wanted to know about you, not talk about herself.”

“Christine loved going to day care at Treetops.” Teresa continues. “It gave her freedom and it was the social aspect too. It was a reason to get up in the morning, and get a break from the same four walls. She came into Treetops, and came out happy.”

When Christine passed away on Boxing Day 2011, aged 65, Nicola decided to raise money so that Treetops could care for more people like Christine. In April this year, Nicola ran the Broxtowe 5k at Bramcote Park, and raised £600 for Treetops Hospice.

Nicola said: “People who didn’t know me were very generous, particularly people at work. I wanted to raise £250, but by the end I’ve more than doubled that. I put up a photo of me at the finish line on the noticeboard at work, and said that I’d raised over £400 but wanted to get to £500. I got lots of extra sponsors. People that normally don’t talk to me would give me a fiver for it.”

And she’s not ruling out more charity events in future: “It’s an achievement, a personal goal, and it’s for a good cause, a local cause. I’m glad to be alive and I want to help others who aren’t as fortunate.”

The field at Treetops is very soggy from all the rain over the last week. We’re very sorry to cancel, but with more rain forecast for Monday, we can’t risk it.

Our next car boot sale (weather permitting) is on Monday 4 June.

Hazel and Richard Large raised the money at a charity evening honouring Sean Large.

It’s the third time the fundraiser has been held at Jim Brennan’s in Long Eaton and money raised was split between Treetops and a local cardiac unit. The evening was preceeded by a 5 a side football tournament at Long Eaton football ground.

Form 8SJJ at George Spencer Academy managed to collect £852.44 after remaining silent during one lesson with teacher Stephanie John. They’d been inspired to fundraise for Treetops after seeing a television news piece about the hospice.

Gay Evans (pictured right, front row), community fundraiser at Treetops, went to collect the money and answer questions from the students. She said: “For one class to raise that much money is phenomenal and we are so grateful for their dedication. We rely so heavily on the support of our local community in order to be able to provide our services, and its great that a local school wanted to get involved.”

The anglers have paid £30 entry fee and the angler who raises the most sponsorship before the event gets first choice of peg. Currently it’s a close run between two anglers who have raised around £350 each.

They will be competing from 6pm on Friday 27 April, until 6pm on Sunday 29 April at Weston Moat Fisheries, Weston on Trent.

The 1st prize is a £100 voucher donated by Weston Baits

• 10 kilos of bait and two t-shirts donated by Nathans of Derby
• £25 voucher donated by Melbourne Gun & Tackle

The group hope to raise around £1,000 for Treetops Hospice.

The event has been organised by Daniel and Melanie Elyard from Derby.

Daniel and Melanie chose Treetops Hospice as Melanie’s mother died from lung cancer in September 2010 and the group wanted to support a local charity.

Treetops is grateful to all the anglers raising money for us at this event.

Charlotte Allen, 23, will jump out of a plane on 19 May – a very significant date as it would have been her nanna’s   84^th birthday.

Mary Hallam passed away in February 2011 after becoming bed bound due to bowel cancer. In the final weeks of   her life, a Treetops Hospice nurse would visit the home to provide respite care during the day and night so her family could have some much-needed rest.

Charlotte said: “She wanted to be at home and we’d do anything to keep her at home so it was a relief that someone was there to help. Being able to have a break now and again made all the difference to granddad and the rest of the family. Granddad wanted to do everything himself, but at his age it was a lot to take on.”

In explaining her fundraising challenge, Charlotte added: “I am so scared of heights but I wanted to do something that would be a real challenge. Hopefully people will sponsor me because with more money Treetops will be able to help more families like mine at what is a really difficult time.”

Charlotte and mum Janice have already raised well over £1,000 for Treetops Hospice by taking part in last year’s Moonlight Walk which Janice plans to do again this year on 22 June. Janice also took part in the Pudding Walk at Christmas.
