Worldwide there are over 7,000 hospices and palliative care services in around 100 countries.
Across developing countries there are many obstacles to development such as lack of pain relieving drugs, legislative problems,
education and finances.
Ongoing interaction between the UK and overseas palliative care
services mean that much mutual learning takes place alongside initiatives to support training and development
In the United Kingdom there are a large number of organisations providing care for adults
and children. Basic levels of palliative care are provided by GPs, district nurses and trained medical professionals, however
many people need more specialist help.
This need is met by many well known organisations such as Marie Curie Cancer Care, Macmillan
Cancer Relief, NHS managed units or independent charitable hospices.
There are over 200 independent charitable hospices in the UK of which Treetops is one.
