FAMILIES BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT

The Families Bereavement Support service runs alongside the adult service and is based at the bereavement centre above the Treetops Hospice shop on Derby Road in Sandiacre, Derbyshire. The team can travel to homes and schools where appropriate.
The service is run by Penny Lockwood, families practitioner, who is a qualified social worker with a Postgraduate Certificate in Childhood Bereavement. There is also a part-time counsellor and a group of volunteer counsellors and support workers.
Who is the service for?
Unlimited support and counselling is offered to children (under 18) and their families where a parent (or parent figure) or sibling have died. The bereavement may have happened any time in the past and the family does not have to have any link to Treetops Hospice. Many of our referrals come after an unexpected or traumatic bereavement.
What kind of support is offered?
Support to the family can involve:
- Individual sessions with children to help them explore their grief
- Family sessions focusing on communication and sharing emotions
- Support to parents/carers to help them understand their child’s grief.
How do I access the service?
Referrals are made either by telephone or letter to Penny Lockwood, families practitioner, and can be made directly from children and their families or from professionals. An assessment visit in the family home will then be arranged.
