VOLUNTEER TRAINING
Training for all volunteer roles
Anyone applying for a volunteer position will need to fill in an application form and undergo an informal interview. Certain statutory training is relevant for all volunteer roles. Depending on the placement, you will be asked to attend manual handling and/or food hygiene training. This will be arranged in-house and at a time and date convenient to you.
Training for retail, fundraising and administrative placements
All volunteers are asked to attend a two and half hour session which will include an introduction to Treetops Hospice, the work of hospices and relevant health and safety information.
Training for roles which involve direct patient contact
These volunteers must attend a seventeen and a half hour course spread over several weeks. This includes the introductory course plus five 3 hour sessions as described below:

Week Two
- The rights of patients and carers
- Roles within the family and the impact of life limiting illnesses
- Attitudes to care
- Diversity awareness
Week Three
- Confidentiality
- Communication and listening skills
- Protection of vulnerable adults
Week Four
- Loss and bereavement
- Practical aspects of care
Week Five
- Spiritual care
- Volunteer Roles
- Close of course
