Colour Rush starting line

Eighteen year old Georgia Hollingworth and her family have signed up to the Treetops Colour Rush on Sunday 16 July to fundraise for the hospice that supported her after her dad died.

The Colour Rush involves children, adults and families being showered in blue, red, orange and green powder paints as they make their way along a 3k route through Markeaton Park.

I found talking to someone I didn’t know really helpful.

Georgia, from Derby, said:

“In November 2014, my dad got really ill and was told he had pancreatic cancer. He passed away in July 2015 and I got really depressed. When I went to the doctor, she referred me to Treetops.

“When I came to Treetops I was expecting it to be more clinical but it wasn’t like that. Even on my first day everyone was really welcoming and wanted to have a chat and it was a nice, homely environment.

It’s how I got my life back on track

“I saw a counsellor called Teresa and went every week to talk to her. I found talking to someone I didn’t know really helpful. What I said stayed between four walls. I felt I was a rock for my family and they would come to me but I needed someone to talk to as well, someone I could trust, so I could cope. It’s how I got my life back on track.

“At the time when my dad took ill, my sister had a new baby and he got to meet his granddaughter for a couple of months. He called her his ‘grand bump’ and ‘Minnie Mia’ – so that’s what we have called our team for the Colour Rush– the Minnie Mia’s.”

Last year, the sponsored event raised over £20,000 for Treetops Hospice Care which provides nursing care and emotional support for adults and their families across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

The Colour Rush, starting at 1pm, is just one part of a packed Family Fun Day running from 11.00am to 4.00pm featuring live music from Furthest from the Sea, fairground rides, bouncy castles, games, food stalls, candy floss and a prosecco bar.

Those interested in taking part can register online.

Advance registration costs £15 for adults, £10 for children and a group ticket (2 adults and 2 children) costs £40. Participants are encouraged to raise as much sponsorship as possible. Tickets can be purchased on the day at an increased price.

Entry to the fun day is free.

Treetops Hospice Care services include Support and Information, a Day Care unit, Hospice at Home nurses and Therapeutic Services including counselling and complementary therapy.
