“Writing my Will has given me great peace of mind. I’ve made things easier for my family by letting them know my wishes.  I also know I’ll be helping local people in the future, by including a gift to Treetops.”*

Most people who use our Will writing services leave a gift in their Will to Treetops. This support is vital for us to provide nursing care and emotional support for people in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

Make a Will Online

We work with Make a Will Online to provide free simple online Wills to our supporters. Every Will is checked by a solicitor, who is also available to answer questions. Once the Will is signed and witnessed, it is legally binding.

Visit a local solicitor

We can’t recommend a solicitor, but you can find one in your area by contacting The Law Society on 020 7242 1222.

There are several local solicitors who offer preferential rates to Treetops’ supporters for writing a simple Will. Some offer home visits or will give advice by phone.  Find a local solicitor

Treetops grounds in spring

Treetops has developed its services to meet the needs of the local community. Thirty-eight years ago, we couldn’t have predicted the number of children needing bereavement care, the challenges faced by the NHS during a pandemic and our role in delivering more end-of-life care in the community.

That’s why the gifts people leave in their Wills are so important, and it’s helpful for us to know about them. They mean we can continue to face new challenges and deliver our vital services for people affected by death and dying.

Letting us know about your gift

When you write your Will online and leave a gift to Treetops, we are told about it. If you would prefer that we do not know about your support, you can pay for the Will directly yourself. If you leave a gift to Treetops when writing a Will with a solicitor, you will need to let us know about it yourself. Then, with your permission, we can keep you informed about our work.

When your Will is not so simple

If you have complicated needs in your Will, for example: dependent relatives/ friends, property overseas, trust income, ongoing legal issues or if your estate will be subject to inheritance tax – we suggest you speak to a solicitor. If you are on strong medication or have concerns about your mental capacity, you should discuss with a solicitor face-to-face.

“I’ve always supported Treetops in little ways – playing the lottery and occasionally giving to appeals.  It’s good to know we have a local hospice and that friends and family could be cared for by Treetops nurses.  That’s why I included Treetops in my Will – I can still make a difference after I’m gone.”*

Frequently asked questions

How is this service offered for free?

Many charities run a Free Wills service for their supporters. Although they do not have to, most supporters choose to leave the charity a gift in their Will. As well as giving supporters the satisfaction of knowing that they will continue to help Treetops Hospice after their death, this gift will cover the cost of the Will.

Anyone using the free Wills service can choose to pay this cost themselves, if they wish. This opportunity is offered during the Will-making process.

How much does each Will cost Treetops?

The cost of a simple Will is £29.50. A pair of mirror Wills (suitable for married couples or civil partners) costs £39.50.

Do I have to leave a gift to Treetops?

Most people who use the free Will service leave a gift in their Will to charity.  And, while you do not have to, after you have looked after your family and friends, we do hope you will consider doing this for Treetops.

Gifts in Wills help fund the care of two in every five of our patients and means we can continue to provide support for many years to come. Whether you decide to leave a few hundred pounds or several thousand pounds to Treetops, you can make a big difference.

Would Treetops know that I had left a gift?

Treetops can access general information about the total value of Wills that include a gift to us and the total value of these gifts. We are not told who has made these Wills or their individual gift value. At the start of the Will-making process you can answer some simple questions to allow your details to be passed on to us. This is your choice.

It’s helpful for us to know about your specific gift as this helps us plan for the future.

If we have your details, we can chat with you about how you may want your gift to support the hospice, keep you informed about our work and invite you to the events we host for people who have left a gift to Treetops in their Will. You will decide how we stay in touch with you and what you want us to get in touch with you about.
