Local carers are being invited to come and take part in a free workshop on Mindfulness at Treetops Hospice Care on Tuesday 7 June during National Carers Week.

National Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges that carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK.

The Mindfulness session, running from 1.00-3.30pm, is one of a series being hosted by Treetops, which provides nursing care and emotional support for adults and their families in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

A safe space

Alison Hembrow, clinical nurse specialist, explained:

“Many people don’t see themselves as carers as they feel that the care they provide for a family member or a friend is simply what they should be doing anyway. They often don’t appreciate that they need support too.

“We give them time and a safe space to talk about their situation and to discuss whatever they like, as well as providing some practical advice and a chance to meet other people in the same situation.

“The next workshop will focus on Mindfulness and how it can be an effective and simple way of calming a racing mind and getting through the day in a more peaceful, less stressful way.”

“I realised that I wasn’t alone”

Linda has been providing care for her husband at home for several years:

“I was finding it very hard and feeling very lonely but as soon as I got involved I realised that I wasn’t alone. The sessions have made me feel so much better and helped me as a person.

“You can become very insular when you’re a carer. You think that you’d best not do this or that or go out and then you can get so tired. To know Alison is at the end of the phone and I can have a few hours of support is simply wonderful. More people should know about this as there are thousands of us out there.”

More workshops are planned throughout the year and all carers are welcome to attend. Those interested should call Alison for more information on 0115 949 1264 or email supportandinformation@treetopshospice.org.uk
