All children respond to, and understand death, in their own unique way.
We have specifically designed training activities to help school staff appreciate a child’s developmental understanding of death and their developmental reactions to grief. The training facilitates learning around the language of death and dying, the skills of empathic listening, and outlines ways in which schools can support individual children, their family and the wider school community following a bereavement.
This was one of the best courses we have ever had. It’s given me much more confidence in being able to support a child or family who are grieving. It was well-presented, informative and enlightening.
The training provides:
- An overview of loss, bereavement, and grief
- A description of current models of grief
- An exploration of children’s understanding of death and their developmental responses
- Key factors which help a grieving child to manage their feelings
- An experience of empathic listening skills
- Examples of positive and practical ways of supporting bereaved children
- An awareness of self-care for staff
