Charlotte's Story

“Please give what you can to help more families receive nursing care and support.” – Charlotte, Ashbourne

A family poses with a decorated cake that reads

My name is Charlotte, I live in Ashbourne with my three-year-old daughter Aurora. In 2022 Treetops nurses helped care for my husband Glen during the most horrific time for my young family. As you’re reading this, Treetops is supporting local families just like mine. If you can, please help them by donating today.

Having Treetops’ support throughout those difficult weeks meant that Glen fulfilled his wish to die at home and we could spend as much quality time together, as a family, making as many memories as we could.

“The Treetops nurses were like rays of sunshine coming in, and we knew that they would help with the pain. They gave us a bit of relief as well, because it meant that all of us could sleep for a few hours.”

Glen was always fit and healthy, but he suddenly developed a persistent pain in his stomach. Just one month before Charlotte’s due date, Glen was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer on his liver.

A parent gently holds a baby feeding from a bottle, surrounded by a whimsical nursery wall featuring elephants and clouds.

Glen began treatment immediately and in September 2021, Baby ‘Aurora Hope’ was born. Named after the beautiful Northern lights that Glen and Charlotte had visited and the hope that they had for Glen’s recovery.

Initially, the treatment was successful and the following May they were given the ‘all clear’. Sadly, the family received the terrible news that the cancer had returned with a vengeance in August. There was nothing more the doctors could do, and Glen was told his condition was terminal.

Glen wanted to be at home with Aurora and Treetops Hospice made that possible.

A family stands together outdoors, smiling. The mother in a polka dot dress holds a baby dressed in white, while the father stands beside them.

Being at home in those final days meant that Glen was able to see Aurora take her first steps, he got to play with her and spend time with the people that he loved. Just 20 days after his terminal diagnosis and only days before Aurora’s 1st birthday, Glen died peacefully, at home, surrounded by his family at the age of 30.
